In the event of a terrorist attack involving a rad ...

March 12, 2003

In the event of a terrorist attack involving a radiation dispersion device or "dirty bomb", the first responder community will be subjected to a new set of hazards. Fire, police, medical and emergency response teams need the information to make smart decisions as they move into and around the incident site to help the victims and seal the area while protecting themselves from the possible hazards of large amounts of radiation.

Canberra, Inc. offers a line of personal radiation monitoring devices, designed to provide the first responder with continuously updated information about the radiation hazard in his or her location. These are designed to be small, unobtrusive and "hands-free" - ensuring that they do not interfere with critical work at hand while providing accurate real time radiation rate and exposure information.

Two models are available. For initial responders whose work may involve physical hazards of shock, water, vibration, and extreme temperature responder organizations will choose the Canberra Mini-Radiac. Mini-Radiac is a commercial version of a device widely deployed by the US military for nuclear battlefield applications. As such, it is designed to the rigorous standards of MIL-STD-810E and a wide range of physical hazards. While initial responders work to save lives in areas of high temperature, water and physical shocks, they can be assured that the Mini-Radiac will provide constant information on radiation doses. Additionally, the unit provides audible, visual and vibration alerts in the event that instantaneous dose rate or accumulated dose reaches a set level indicating immediate hazard.

Other first responders such as medical technicians, traffic control officers and others - need protection but may not require the ruggedness associated with the Mini-Radiac. For those applications, the Canberra Dosicard provides accurate dose information in a cost effective, ultra-small, ultra-light credit card sized package. While less physically robust than the Mini-Radiac, the Dosicard will still stand up to routine hazards and provide real-time information as well as audible and visual alarms.

Comprehensive first responder training augments the use of both devices. Extending beyond the operation of the dosimetry devices, Canberra training includes information on radiation basics and radiation hazards as well as practical issues to help the first responder community make smart decisions in the event of a nuclear incident. Training courses are designed to avoid excessive scientific and technical jargon - and focus on the direct needs of first responders.

Canberra, Inc. is the world leader in radiation measurement technologies. For over 35 years, Canberra has provided equipment and services for the full spectrum of radiation measurement applications. The company has long served the needs of nuclear community - including protection of the radiation worker, environmental assessment and monitoring, nuclear material control for national security and international treaty enforcement, radioactive waste management and nuclear power operations.
