July 9, 2003

City Councilor Anthony D. Tomassetti will try to breathe new life into the old Napier Co. complex, starting with his own business. Tomassetti Distributors is the sole tenant of the building on Cambridge Street, which has been vacant since 1999, and the city councilor is the new property manager, according to Joseph F. Carabetta. Thirty-Seven Cambridge Street, a Carabetta-owned entity, bought the 6.78-acre complex in January.

"I'm taking care of the building and maintaining it," said Tomassetti, whose company is using part of the 118,000-square-foot complex for overflow storage. Tomassetti Distributors headquarters will remain at 266 Reservoir Ave., he said, as will his 30-person staff.

The former jewelry plant will simply serve as a drop-off and storage point, he said. "I'm just looking to grow," Tomassetti said. "I can't expand anymore at Reservoir." Tomassetti Distributors has 15,305 square feet of storage and 2,945 square feet of office space at its headquarters, according to city land records.

The former Napier property served as both a manufacturing and corporate headquarters. The 19th century brick building and accompanying steel structure had been an emblem of the city's manufacturing past. Napier opened in 1924, and costume jewelry made at the Cambridge Street site was sold all over the world.

Besides manufacturing and storage space, the building includes as many as 50 finished offices, Tomassetti said.

When it comes to the Cambridge Street complex, Carabetta, Tomassetti and the city all share the same interest: to revive a vacant building. "Certainly we're ready to help in whatever way we can," Economic Development Director Peggy Brennan said. The site is in the city's enterprise zone, which allows manufacturers state tax abatements.
