Meriden Health Department Smoking Cessation Program Awarded Grant

August 10, 2016

The Meriden Health Department has been awarded a grant from the Connecticut Department of Public Health, Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Program to provide smoking cessation services FREE OF CHARGE. We are targeting Meriden, Wallingford and Southington residents, but no one will be turned away. Regretfully, tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States, resulting in nearly 5,000 deaths annually here in Connecticut. Tobacco use also contributes to an even higher rate of disease and disability especially in low income and medically underserved populations. I'm sure I don't have to tell you about the health care costs / financial implications for the employer when an employee smokes! Increased absences and at times diminished productivity are also associated risk factors for smokers. PLEASE help us to spread the word about our program.

We offer: - Individual and small group counseling led by a certified tobacco treatment specialist based on US Public Health Services Guidelines. A weekly support group known as Tobacco Free Tuesday meets most Tuesdays starting at 5:30pm. - Free nicotine replacement therapy to include patches, gum, lozenges and advice on their proper use. (When appropriate recommendations about prescription medications approved for tobacco cessation will be made and the use of e-cigarettes will be discouraged). - Referrals to the Connecticut QUIT LINE and other resources for additional support. I am also available to host a QUIT Clinic (an info session providing Quick Useful Information about Tobacco) on site at your business or satellite location. I can provide a limited supply of educational materials or flyers for posting on bulletin boards and or for electronic distribution.

The contact person for the program is Geralyn Laut, BS, MA, Smoking Cessation Counselor. Please contact her for more information to include recommendations for a comprehensive tobacco free policy or to arrange a personal meeting at your convenience. Thank you in advance for your support of this potentially lifesaving program!

Geralyn can be reached at the Meriden Health Department, 165 Miller St., Meriden or call (203) 630-4003 or E-mail to glaut@meridenct.gov.
