Special Note for MEN from the Health Dept.

May 22, 2013

Hey guys - when was the last time you...

...had your blood pressure checked? A blood pressure reading has a top number (systolic) and bottom number (diastolic). Normal blood pressure is less than 120 over 80 (120/80). Anything over that could lead to health problems. There is no charge for blood pressure checks - come on down!

...had your height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) checked? The average American man is about 5'9" tall and should weigh less than 196, the cut off for obesity. Taller folks can add 5 pounds per inch; if you're shorter, subtract 5 pounds per inch. A waist size over 40 inches in men greatly increases the risk of chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and more. Body mass should be no more than 30. There is no charge to check all of these numbers - and we'll write them down for you.

...had your total cholesterol and blood sugar checked? High cholesterol is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and elevated blood sugar levels could be warning sign of diabetes. Each test is only $6 and you get your results within 5 minutes.

And, if you have a new baby or grandbaby at home, did you get the Tdap vaccine to prevent whooping cough (also known as pertussis)? Whooping cough is a disease that is spread person-to-person and causes coughing spells so bad that it is hard for infants to eat, drink, or breathe. We offer the Tdap vaccine for only $20.
