Swine Flu - Public Health Emergency Advisory

April 27, 2009

CITY OF MERIDEN PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY ADVISORY: INFORMATION ON SWINE FLU

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced that there have been several cases of swine influenza (swine flu) reported nationwide, including cases in New York City. There are no confirmed cases in Connecticut at this time.

Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by a type A influenza virus that regularly causes outbreaks of the flu among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans; however, human infections with swine flu do occur. Public health officials have determined that this strain of swine flu virus spreads from human to human and can cause illness.

The symptoms of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of seasonal flu and may include:

Fever (greater than 100 F); Sore throat; Cough; Stuffy nose ; Chills; Headaches and body aches; Fatigue.

Residents can prevent and/or reduce swine flu infection by: Avoiding contact with ill persons; When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or your sleeve. Throw used tissues in a trash can; After you cough or sneeze, wash your hands with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand gel; If you think you are ill with flu, avoid close contact with others as much as possible. Stay at home. Do not go to work, school, or travel while ill. ; Seek medical care if you are ill.

For more information on swine flu, please visit the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/swineflu/ or contact your primary care doctor.
