For several months, A-1 Services, Inc. on Colony Street in Meriden has been using a new device that detects cracks in furnace heat exchangers by a minuscule video camera on a flexible stem to reach through the exchanger. This new device, called The Inspector, can convince customers of the need for repairs or replacement of a furnace. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that can be created by almost any improperly performing fuel-burning appliance, including water heaters, space heaters and furnaces. The gas is invisible and undetectable by smell or taste. It causes the deaths of about 200 Americans each year and the hospitalization of thousands. Dave Liseo, owner of A-1 Services, maintains that a furnace can show signs of corrosion after about 10 years, and using The Inspector helps to convince owners of the need to purchase a new one.
