The Center held an awards luncheon at the Aqua Turf on May 2nd to honor nine women for their community service and leadership for women and children. Connecticut Lieutenant Governor M. Jodi Rell was also honored for her efforts towards cancer awareness, her success in granting World War II veterans their high school diplomas, and her efforts to eliminate violence in schools. Sister Georgeann Vumbaco, principal of St. Joseph School in Meriden, received the award for leadership in the professions. Jane Milas, a Board Member of the Center for three years, was chosen volunteer of the year. Patricia Surprenant, the new Executive Director of the center after the retirement of Shane Rood, commented that women have come a long way, but as they keep moving the ceiling keeps on going up.
