July 21, 2003

Effective July 1, 2003, Women and Families Center will provide sexual assault crisis services in New Haven and the surrounding communities of Bethany, Branford, East Haven, Guilford, Hamden, Madison, New Haven, North Branford, North Haven, West Haven and Woodbridge. The Coordinating Council for Children in Crisis decided to discontinue offering the sexual assault crisis program in this service area. Beginning July 1, Women and Families Center will open an office in New Haven at 357 Whitney Avenue. The office number is (203) 624-2273. "Although we are disappointed that the Coordinating Council for Children in Crisis decided to close this program we are working closely with both programs to ensure a smooth transition," said Gail Burns-Smith, Executive Director of CONNSACS. "The Women and Families Center Sexual Assault Crisis Service program has provided services in the greater New Haven area for over 20 years, and has a strong staff of counselors and advocates who are looking forward to serving the community," she continued. Robyn-Jay Bage, Chief Executive Officer of Women and Families Center, and Sharlene Kerry, Director of Sexual Assault Crisis Services are looking forward to operating an expanded service area. Bage noted, "The opportunity to provide these critical services to New Haven and surrounding communities, and to share the Women and Families Center mission of empowerment is very exciting. We remain committed to ensuring that sexual assault victims and their families get the support they need and deserve." Women and Families Center is a multi-faceted human service agency committed to eliminating injustice and to improving the quality of life for women and families, through services that foster empowerment and independence. Programs include early childhood education and school-readiness, school-age programming, youth outreach and recreation, employment and training, and sexual assault crisis services.
