Assisted Living Services Launch Carrier Alert Program: Introduction Marks 30th Anniversary of NALC-USPS Initiative

The City of Meriden announced that it will reestablish its Carrier Alert program this week as a service to elderly, disabled and special needs residents. A collaborative effort between Meriden officials, Assisted Living Services, the National Association of the Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS); the initiative's launch is aimed at offering Meriden citizens with additional safeguards in the event of an emergency.

The program commenced with a press conference on Friday, August 3rd at 10:30 AM at the Meriden Senior Center, located at 22 West Main Street. Representatives from the Post Office, the City of Meriden and Assisted Living Services were on hand to introduce the program and enroll residents.

Additional enrollment opportunities followed on Tuesday, August 7th at 1:00 PM in the Community Room in Harbor Towers, located at 60 Hanover Street; Wednesday, August 8th at 1:00 PM in the Community Room at Hanover Towers, located at 76 Butler Street; and Thursday, August 9th at 1:00 PM in the lobby of Victoria Towers at 410 East Main Street.

"Meriden is proud to once again offer the Carrier Alert program in an effort to protect the health and welfare of our citizens," City Councilwoman Danté Bartolomeo said. "Bringing this initiative back to Meriden will give enrolled residents and their families some additional peace of mind that their community is looking out for them by working together."

Carrier Alert is a nationwide joint program of the NALC and USPS, operating in collaboration with local service organizations and municipalities. This cooperative community service initiative began in 1982 to monitor the well-being of elderly and disabled postal patrons. Since a previous implementation of this program in Meriden has expired, and with July 2012 being the 30th anniversary of Carrier Alert, the program is being reestablished locally.

Carrier Alert protocol is as follows: if a volunteer carrier notices something unusual concerning a patron registered with Carrier Alert, a postal supervisor contacts the sponsoring local agency. The agency then checks on the individual, and if something is wrong, contacts the family. If deemed appropriate, police and/or emergency services are notified.

Assisted Living Services has agreed to serve as Meriden's local sponsor agency. As such, they will maintain the patron's family contact database and monitor calls for service during the hours of postal delivery.

Per a unanimous vote of the City Council, Meriden has agreed to fund the printing and distribution of promotional materials to promote the Carrier Alert program. In addition, Meriden's Senior Center and the Department of Health and Human Services will help to facilitate program enrollment.
