Keeping Your Holidays Happy & Scam Free Presented by Webster Bank
November 18, 2025
The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for both shoppers and scammers. From fake online stores to phony shipping notices, fraudsters use every trick in the book to get your money or personal information. Here are some of the most common holiday scams to watch for and how to protect yourself: - Fake Online Stores: Look-alike websites and ads on social media may offer incredible deals that don't exist - Shop only with trusted retailers and check for "https://" in the web address. - Package Delivery Scams: Emails or texts claim a package can't be delivered unless you click a link or pay a fee - Track packages directly through the carrier's official website. - Gift Card Payment Requests: No legitimate business will ask for payment by gift card - If someone insists, it's a scam - hang up or delete the message. - Charity Scams: Scammers often pose as charitable organizations this time of year - Verify charities through sites like Charity Navigator before donating. - Fake Travel Deals: "Too-good-to-be-true" vacation offers can leave you stranded - or broke - Book travel directly with trusted providers. - Social Media Giveaways or "Secret Santa" Scams: Posts that promise lots of gifts in exchange for one are just a way to collect money or data - Never share personal info or send gifts to strangers online.
Protect Yourself Year-Round: - Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication. - Set up account alerts to monitor transactions in real time. - Avoid shopping on public Wi-Fi and keep your devices updated.
