Meriden Memorial 'Virtual' Mile walk/run benefit begins next week! Will you join us?

May 11, 2020

As Spring takes hold, you'll be ever-more tempted to get outdoors - at a safe distance, of course! If you enjoy walking or running, here's a little something you can do to both take care of yourself AND some of our neighbors who are struggling in these times.

Here's how the 'virtual' Mile works:

1. Register online for the Mile. Just $10!

2. Then walk or run your Mile ANY TIME between Friday, May 15 and Monday, May 25. Registration will remain open through the end of Monday, May 25

3. After you've completed your Mile, upload your time, or just let us know that you completed your Mile

4. Congratulate yourself on a job well done!

Note that ALL registration fees will benefit the Meriden-Wallingford Community COVID Response Fund. As an added bonus, all online registrations will be entered into a raffle to win one of 10 Lyman Orchard pies (we'll mail winners a gift certificate, to practice pie safety)!!

You can do your Mile anywhere you want, so long as you maintain your social distance - on your treadmill, on your balcony, around the block, etc. You can do your Mile in CT - or any where in the world! Pick a rainy or sunny day. Push a stroller, walk a dog. You can take a leisurely stroll, or you can go as fast as you can.

The Mile website has more info on how to track your Mile & to share your Mile result (and pix!) with us. T-shirts are still available this year.

We're heartened by the spirit for this year's Mile. Check out these stories:

Meriden's Nathan Hale Elementary School Ambassadors will participate in the Mile fundraiser (with parental supervision) while social distancing. Principal Karen Dahn writes: "Our students have a need to help others, and we are happy for this safe and healthy opportunity to do so!

Peter Galgano, the Veterans Outreach Coordinator at Middlesex Community College: "I will forward your email to all of our veterans at Middlesex Community College!

And Ray Degnan, the athletic director at Hamden's Sacred Heart Academy included this in an e-newsletter to the SHA school community, inspired by one of their students: "My dad has a friend who plans a Memorial Day Mile Race every year, but obviously this year things are a bit complicated and the race cannot physically take place. However, he has figured out a way for people to participate virtually." Ray adds: "I think it is a great idea and a fantastic opportunity for the SHA family."

How cool is that!? Will you join us in going the extra Mile? Sign-up today! Feel free to like us on Facebook & share this note with 1000 of your friends and family members.
