Each year a rabbi determines whether the candy manufactured by Thompson is kosher, the rules of which originate in the Bible. The Food Network researches companies to profile nationwide. It featured the kosher candy on it "Holidays Unwrapped" program on December 2nd , 8th and 9th. Network Vice President Kathleen Finch is from Darien and comments that people are surprised to find kosher candy in central Connecticut. Thompson has a long history and a tremendous reputation. It makes more than two million chocolate coins each year, some of which are used for Hanukkah gelts. All Thompson products are kosher. Plant engineer Kirsten Sullivan discusses the great effort made to guarantee the purity of the food, part of the reason being religious, the other a concern for health and safety.
