Getting Fit at Barker Specialty

In an effort to promote healthy living, Barker Specialty Company introduced their first "Get Fit Challenge," a 12-week voluntary program challenging Barker Specialty employees to adapt a more active lifestyle.The premise of the program is very simple�exercise, earn points and end up as a top winner. Almost every Barker employee in both the Connecticut and Florida offices signed up for the program, and everyone was given a pedometer to track their progress. For every mile walked, half hour at the gym or class taken at a gym, a person earned points. After every week, the points were counted and posted on a special Barker "Get Fit" website where people could track not only their hard work but the progress of their co-workers. At the end of the challenge, eight winners were given prizes.
The program proved to be very effective and fun. After the 12 weeks, Barker employees walked more than 875 miles, attended over 150 gym classes and clocked in 300 hours at the gym. "Barker Specialty is very happy that the program was such a success and that our employees were excited to get fit," said Kelly D'Andrea, program coordinator of the "Get Fit Challenge."
