The paper won 22 awards, including six first-place prizes in the annual competition sponsored by the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Photographer Michelle McLaughlin and Suburban Editor Mary Ellen Godin won separate first-place awards for the photo essay on the closing of the trailer park in Wallingford. Assistant Sports Editor Bryant Carpenter won two first-place awards for his series on the state of high school inter-scholastic sports and a feature story on Meriden race car driver Eric Berndt. Sports copy editor George Dalek won first-place for headline writing. Executive Editor James H. Smith won the First Amendment Award for the second year in a row for his columns and essays on free speech and press. Second place awards were granted to reporter Jason Barry, writer Ted Moynahan, Sports Editor Bob Morrissette, copy editor Kathy O'Connell, Jacqueline Smith, and Chief Photographer Chris French. Honorable Mention was awarded to Editorial Page Editor Allan Church, reporter Ralph Hohman, Features Editor Jeff Kurz, Assistant Managing Editor Dorothy Hall, photographer Chris Angileri, and Photo Director John Russ.
