The newspaper was among 24 companies honored earlier this month by the Department of Environmental Protection with GreenCircle Awards. DEP recognizes companies, nonprofit organizations, schools and individuals that have worked on conservation and environmental awareness since 1998. The Record-Journal is a winner again, for consistently using more than 40 per cent recycled newsprint in its publications. 10-12 tractor trailers full of newsprint pull up to the loading dock to keep the paper in circulation. Other companies such as the Yale Daily News rely on the presses. This equals about 250 tons of newsprint each month. Rep. Mary Mushinsky, who drafted the state law on recycling, commended the paper for continuously being a leader in the effort, even surpassing the larger papers.
