Imagine, if you will, being 5 years old and walking into your kindergarten class only speaking the Spanish language. You are feeling nervous asking yourself the questions as you anticipate the first day of kindergarten: Will I be understood? Will I get lost? Will my teacher accept me? Will I make friends? Who will I sit with in the cafeteria? Will I learn quickly enough to accomplish my dreams? Will I fit in?These are the feelings I had as a kindergarten student at Pulaski elementary school. I was blessed to have Mrs. Rometta Pinckney as my kindergarten teacher and immediately she made me feel welcome. Her genuine, calm and empathetic demeanor were immediately noticed the minute I walked into the classroom. I felt welcomed.
Being bilingual is something I am extremely proud of and I owe gratitude to my parents who always spoke Spanish at home and instilled the importance of maintaining our native language to my sister and me. We have always had a great appreciation of our Puerto Rican roots. My parents came to Connecticut from Puerto Rico to achieve the American dream. They endured many emotional, social and financial struggles in Puerto Rico and suffered loss. They both knew they wanted better for their next generation. They came here and worked hard until they were able to achieve buying their very first home. This shows that through hard work, passion and dedication you can achieve anything.
