The newspaper recently announced several promotions. Suburban editor Eric Cotton becomes city editor, copy editor Art Durity is suburban editor, sportswriter Bryant Carpenter becomes assistant sports editor, and Jane Mills has been hired as business editor. Executive Editor Jim Smith is pleased to hire and promote local people with a knowledge of the area. Eric Cotton replaces Jackie Smith, who has accepted a position as an assistant professor of journalism at Southern Connecticut State University. Art Durity joined the newspaper in 1998 as a copy editor after founding the Berlin Citizen and eventually selling it to the Record-Journal. Jane Mills graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall in Wallingford and the University of New Mexico. She has worked in film production both as an associate producer and camera person as well as a reporter. Bryant Carpenter worked in the mid-1980's as a Southington reporter for the Record-Journal and spent most of the '90's as sports editor of the Southhampton Press on Long Island. While there he wrote the definitive book on the Hampton Classic annual horse show. He returned here in 1998. His Record-Journal reporting has been recognized by the Society of Professional Journalists.
