Record-Journal Executive Editor and Senior Vice Pr ...

July 14, 2005

Record-Journal Executive Editor and Senior Vice President James H. Smith has accepted the position of editor at the Connecticut Post in Bridgeport. His appointment was announced Thursday by Post Publisher Robert H. Laska and Record-Journal Publisher Eliot C. White.

"We're extremely happy to have a journalist with Jim's credentials join our already talented team. His years of news and management experience in Connecticut will certainly make his transition to The Post an easy one," Laska said.

"Jim has been a major contributor to the success of the Record-Journal during his time here. He has been a strong leader through many changes and has been recognized throughout the newspaper industry for his excellence," White said. "This is a great opportunity for his personal growth and for the growth of the Post. We wish him success."

Smith, 58, came to Meriden in 1992. He won a Distinguished Writing Award in 2003 from the American Society of Newspaper Editors for his columns explaining and defending the First Amendment. The same year he also received the Yankee Quill Award, a lifetime achievement award from the New England Society of Newspaper Editors and the New England Academy of Journalists. He has twice won the First Amendment Award sponsored by the Connecticut chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for his columns explaining the role of the press in a free society.

"This was a tough decision for me," Smith said at a staff meeting Thursday. "I love this newspaper, I love the people who work at this newspaper and I love this community, but this is an opportunity I could not refuse." Smith served as a Pulitzer Prize juror the past two years. He spent 14 years at The Hartford Courant, as a reporter and then in various editing positions. He led three Connecticut newspapers - The Day of New London, The News-Times of Danbury (he was managing editor of both) and the Record-Journal - to the New England Newspaper of the Year Award sponsored by the New England Newspaper Association. He is on the Board of Governors of the New England Society of Newspaper Editors.

His wife, Jacky, is an assistant managing editor at the Record-Journal.

White will be interviewing candidates to replace Smith, whose last day at the Record-Journal will be July 22.
