R-J staffers took three second-place awards: reporter Martin J. Waters for general reporting, former reporter Hannah Glover in business coverage, and copy editor Richard Mason for headline writing. Other honorable mention awards went to Carpenter and to Sports Editor Bob Morrissette for sports columns, photographer Dave Zajac for feature photography, and Glover for in-depth reporting. Reporter Betsy Tranquilli won a first place, second place and honorable mention in the competition for weekly newspapers for work she did at the Hamden Chronicle before she was hired here. T.C. Karmel, the free-lance journalist who covers Uconn women's basketball for the Record-Journal, took a first place for magazine sports feature writing for a piece she wrote for Connecticut magazine. Sue VanDerzee, editor of the Town Times in Durham, which is owned by the Record-Journal, took a first place in the weekly papers category for Page One layout and second place for editorials and news photography.

The awards were presented Thursday at the SPJ annual banquet at Fantasia in North Haven. The Record-Journal competed in the 25,000 to 50,000 circulation category.
