CTDOT Announces New Express Bus Route 940 Connecting Waterbury and Meriden- New Weekday Express Route Provides Quick Travel Times Between Waterbury and Meriden

January 25, 2022

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced the launch of the new Route 940 Meriden-Waterbury Express serving Meriden and Waterbury, Connecticut. The service will operate fare-free until February 28, 2022.

The new express route operates on weekdays only, providing quick travel times between the two cities. From Waterbury, the bus originates at the Waterbury Green before making stops at Waterbury Train Station and Meriden Train Station. From Meriden, the route originates at the Meriden Train Station with a stop at the Waterbury Green. As with all express bus routes, this new route uses coach-style buses, which include free Wi-Fi and mobile device charging ports for passengers.

"We are pleased to announce this new express bus service between Meriden and Waterbury," stated CTDOT Bureau Chief for Public Transportation Rich Andreski. "The new route will better connect residents of both cities and provides better access to the Waterbury Line, the Hartford Line, and many destinations throughout the state."

The route operates from approximately 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. with half-hourly service during peak hours and hourly service in the midday and evening hours. Service has been designed to arrive at Meriden Train Station ten minutes prior to Hartford Line trains. The bus will also wait for ten minutes for connecting train passengers to board the bus. This was done to ensure ease of connecting to and from Hartford Line trains.

Beginning March 1, 2022, the fare for the new route will be a CTtransit Express Bus Zone 2 fare based on the distance between the stops. A two-hour pass is $3.20 and includes unlimited local and express bus rides for the number of zones paid during that two hours. A full day pass is $6.40. Children aged four and under are free and up to three children with free fare can board with each paying adult fare. Senior citizens and persons with a disability are charged $1.60 for a two-hour pass and $3.20 for a full-day pass. A State of Connecticut issued Reduced Fare ID or Medicare card must be shown prior for those discounted fares. In addition, 31-day passes are sold as well as Ten-Ride Tickets and Senior/Persons with Disabilities Ten-Ride Tickets.
