Masonicare Awarded $75,000 Grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) for Electronic Medication Administration

April 10, 2012

Masonicare is pleased to announce it has received a $75,000 grant from the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA). The grant will help fund the installation of an Electronic Medication Administration Record (eMAR) at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford. Representatives of CHEFA formally presented the grant on March 30 at the Health Center.

A workflow management system, eMAR will automate the less efficient and error-prone, paper-based medication administration process. Some hospitals in Connecticut currently use this system, but Masonicare Health Center will be one of just a few nursing homes in the state to use eMAR.

With the assistance of eMAR, Masonicare's nursing staff will have an easier and more efficient way to conduct daily medication passes to ensure that the "five rights" of medication administration are met: right patient, right drug, right dose, right route of administration and right time.

Melinda Schoen, vice president of administration for Masonicare Health Center, said, "Masonicare sincerely thanks CHEFA for awarding us this grant. It will allow us to purchase the software and hardware needed, including medication carts, laptops, bar code scanners and wireless access and accessories, to train and implement eMAR technology on Masonicare Health Center's acute care and rehab units and selected long-term care units."

Masonicare is Connecticut's leading not-for-profit provider of healthcare and retirement living for seniors.
