Masonicare Health Center Thanks More Than 200 volunteers At Recognition Luncheon at Ashlar Village

April 9, 2012

In celebration of National Volunteer Services Week, and in keeping with an annual tradition, Masonicare Health Center of Wallingford honored more than 200 adult volunteers from in-house and the community at the 39th Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon held on April 5 at Masonicare at Ashlar Village, Masonicare's Continuing Care Retirement Community on the Wallingford campus.

Volunteers who contributed a minimum of 25 hours during the volunteer "year," which extended from March 2011 to February 2012, received a pin in recognition of their service. Altogether, 498 volunteers (including in-house, adult community, junior, and community service) contributed 48,568 hours this year.

Three volunteers from the community - George W. Smith of North Haven (1,349 hours), Eleanor Lianos (1,090 hours) and Evelyn Della Rocco (997 hours) of Wallingford, and three volunteers from in-house -Marge Butler (885), Alcine Reed (717 hours), and John Buchanan (555), received special recognition for contributing the most hours during the year.

For the fifteenth year in a row, Masonicare Health Center awarded $500 scholarships to student volunteers who are pursuing careers in the healthcare field. Each recipient volunteered a minimum of 100 hours at Masonicare Health Center.

The students who will receive William Loefstedt scholarships are Vipra Patel of Berlin, a nursing student at the University of Connecticut, who will be a sophomore in the fall, and Jaydeanne Pawlowski, who is graduating from Sheehan High School and will attend Southern Connecticut State University as a nursing student. The Valerie W. Winchester scholarships have been awarded to Joseph Lee of Wallingford, who will be a sophomore in the nursing program at the University of Connecticut, and Rachel Uraco, who will be graduating from Sheehan and will major in psychology at the University of New Haven.

Masonicare Health Center, which is open to all, offers a wide variety of opportunities for adults and teenagers to volunteer their time and energy to help provide the best possible care environment for patients and residents. Regardless of a person's age or occupation, a caring manner and a helping hand can make a difference in the life of an older adult. Volunteer opportunities are available in several areas, including acute care, skilled nursing, assisted living, independent living, outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation, and several specialty clinics and therapies.

Masonicare Health Center is an affiliate of Wallingford-based Masonicare, Connecticut's leading not-for-profit provider of healthcare and retirement living for seniors.
