Barry M. Spero, President and Chief Executive Offi ...

June 28, 2005

Barry M. Spero, President and Chief Executive Officer of Masonicare since 1995, has announced his plans to retire from the healthcare and retirement organization at the end of September. At that time, Mr. Spero will be succeeded by Stephen B. McPherson, Masonicare's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. The announcement was made by Howard W. Orr, Chairman of the Masonicare Board of Trustees. In his ten years with Masonicare, Mr. Spero has seen the organization through several expansions and initiatives, including its acquisition of Connecticut VNA, the largest home healthcare and hospice program in the state, the construction of new independent living apartments on its Wallingford campus, and the construction of new assisted living communities on both its Wallingford and Newtown campuses. Currently, Masonicare's continuing care retirement community affiliate, Ashlar Village, situated adjacent to the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford, is involved in an expansion, the first phase of which is currently underway with the construction of 40 new one-story villas. Mr. Spero came to Masonicare with an extensive background in hospital administration, including the presidency of Maimonides Medical Center in New York City and Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts. A fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Mr. Spero is active in the non-profit healthcare sector. He is currently chairman of the Connecticut Not-for-profit Providers for the Aging (CANPFA) and a past member of the board of its national counterpart, the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging (AAHSA.) A resident of North Haven, he also serves on the board of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce. "Barry has been a wonderful leader for Masonicare, its patients and their families, as well as employees," said Mr. Orr. "I have enjoyed working with him and know his retirement is well-deserved." Mr. McPherson has been Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Masonicare since February 2003, with responsibility for several affiliates as well as finance, marketing and information systems. He joined the organization in 2000 as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, overseeing several initiatives including the development and implementation of a formal, system-wide risk management program, a self-insurance program for workers compensation, malpractice and general liability coverage and the integration of strategic planning with financial modeling. Prior to joining Masonicare, Mr. McPherson was Chief Financial Officer and Vice President, Finance, of the Saint Raphael Healthcare System and Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven. A resident of Orange, he is a board member of the Connecticut Alliance for Integrated Care, past secretary for the Alliance for Long Term Care Financial Managers, a former board member of the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce, and former adjunct faculty member in the Master's of Public Health program at University of New Haven. He serves as treasurer of the Board of Directors of Keystone Indemnity. He is an advanced member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and past president of its Connecticut chapter. He is also a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives. "We have been very fortunate in our succession planning process," said Mr. Orr. "Steve has worked closely with Barry and our boards as well as with many members of the management team. He is well-prepared to transition into this top leadership position." Masonicare is Connecticut's largest not-for-profit provider of healthcare and retirement living for seniors, with campuses in Wallingford and Newtown, as well as statewide homecare and hospice services.
