Lincoln College of New England Wildcats Reach National "Cinderella" Stardom!

March 5, 2014

If Hoosiers had been set in 2013 Connecticut, the story would have played out a lot like this: in a true Cinderella story, the LCNE Wildcats men's basketball team has earned a berth in the national division III championships happening in Loch Sheldrake, New York March 13-15. The squad fought through injuries and a mid-season slump to tear off a string of 13 straight second-half wins before racking up 15- and 20- point victories in the Regional Semi-final and championship games, respectively.

LCNE is by far the smallest school to reach the national tournament this year and may be one of the smallest schools ever to reach this level. The Wildcat's accomplishments on the court this year have come through heart, teamwork and a deep sense of family as they worked together and supported one another, even in the midst of challenges.

Before the season began, the competition might have looked at their schedule and asked, "Who are the Lincoln College of New England Wildcats??" Until this y ear, they'd never posted a winning season. They ended the 2012-13 season at 12-16, and needed new blood to right the Wildcat ship. Dwayne Cameron, Associate Dean of Student Life, brought in Coach Preston Beverly. Coach Beverly immediately set an ambitious goal for his new squad: becoming the Regional Champions of the newly combined, more competitive NJCAA Region XXI. Starting without a complete set of uniforms, any practice gear, or even returning players, Coach Beverly built the team one step at a time.

After recruiting his coaching staff and nearly two dozen students from several states including Ohio, Folorida, New Jersey and New York, Coach Beverly decided to test his team right out of the gate. He began the season with three away games against top ten nationally ranked teams; he knew after narrowly winning two of these treee games that this team had what it took to go the distance.

That distance has led all the way to the national championships for a team that, until this season, was strapped to find a place to practice, let alone a home court to call their own. When the Wildcats step onto the court in Loch Sheldrake next week they will be doing so as perhaps the biggest Cincerella story in college basketball this year - and they'll have the entire LCNE community cheering them on from Southington, CT!
