Hunter's Ambulance Service's 50th Anniversary

July 10, 2013

50 years ago, Vern Hunter and his late wife Barbara, embarked on a new business adventure. Vern started by driving a tow truck and he would often times arrive at a scene prior to the local ambulance. In many cases, he would assist the ambulance driver. Through this experience he realized that there was a need for better emergency services so he bought his first ambulance in 1963 and went into business.

In 1964, he completed the first Ambulance American Red Cross Course; in 1965, the National Ambulance Training Institute course; in 1969, the first National Ambulance Training course; and in 1971, Hunter graduated from the first Emergency Medical Technician course in the state. In addition, Vern has served on the Connecticut Ambulance Advisory Board under two governors and as the President of the Association of Connecticut Ambulance Providers. Hunter's also provides transportation for wheelchair transports and transportation for medically fragile students for some area school boards. In 1990, the company also added Hunter Limousines, Ltd.

The company's logo, "Concern for Others", is something the company strives to achieve every day. Not only in its treatment of their customers but also by being involved in the communities in which Hunter's provides service. Vern's dream has grown to include 450 employees with two bases in Meriden and one each in Middletown, Berlin, Wallingford and Old Saybrook. Upon his retirement he recognized that the success of the company was due, in a large part, to the hard work of his family and his employees so Vern restructured the company to be an Employee Stock Option Plan company, allowing the employees a direct ownership stake in the company.

Donna Hunter, President, credits her father for having made Hunter's the success it is today. Donna plans to keep the company moving forward by serving the community and readying Hunter's Ambulance for the upcoming changes in the emergency services industry. Donna was recently quoted as stating, "We want to be at the forefront of the industry and be a part of the solution!"
