March 1, 2005

Congratulations to the Grelak Family on celebrating their 60th anniversary. In a time when technology often takes priority over personal attention, it is refreshing to see an establishment that still prides itself on the values that it deemed essential when it first opened its doors. The Hawthorne Inn Restaurant and Lodge is celebrating 60 years of continued service under the ownership and management of the Grelak family. Located on the Berlin Turnpike in Berlin, Connecticut, the Hawthorne Inn is more than just a community icon as it is well known statewide and throughout New England. With 68 deluxe guest rooms, an award-winning restaurant, and banquet and meeting accommodations to accommodate groups of 8 to 350, customers of the Hawthorne Inn for the past six decades have come back time and time again for the outstanding cuisine and unparalleled service that the Grelak family believes is just as important today as it was in 1945.

For 19 years and counting, Connecticut Magazine's Readers' Choice Restaurant Awards have honored the Hawthorne Inn with the Award for the Best Prime Rib Statewide. Guests can also enjoy the extensive wine menu, which wonderfully compliments the vast array of steak, beef, lamb, poultry, and seafood they serve. The lounge offers happy hour Monday-Friday 4:30-6:30 featuring $2.00 drink specials and complimentary hors D'oeuvres: entertainment Friday and Saturday evenings. . A La Carte dining is available in the restaurant or banquet room for parties up to 25 people. Join the Hawthorne in celebrating its anniversary as they offer an exclusive menu for $60.00 per couple (excluding tax and gratuity) including a bottle of wine. This special will be available from February 15 to May 1, 2005.

When the Grelak family first purchased the Hawthorne, the restaurant's second floor was their family's residence until 1959 and since has been converted to four private function rooms accommodating private dinners or meetings. With a total of 12 smaller function rooms and the main ballroom, the Hawthorne is the perfect choice to accommodate an array of social functions from the intimate to the lavish: just right for family reunions, holiday gatherings, and weddings. And of course, the central location of the Inn is ideal for board retreats and business functions.

Located next door to the restaurant is the lodge which can accommodate the overnight needs for out-of-town attendees. Guests can enjoy deluxe accommodations with all the comforts of home including in-room refrigerators, an iron and ironing board, and hairdryer. The Inn offers all guests free high speed wireless (and wired) internet access, complimentary deluxe continental breakfast, and use of its outdoor pool and exercise room. Seasonal weekend packages, AAA, and corporate rates available. This pet friendly property is most well known for its mascot, Max, the Saint Bernard, the Inn's official door greeter.

The original Hawthorne Inn was built approximately 100 years ago, and in the mid 1930's, became an inn providing lodging for travelers between New York and Boston. The name Hawthorne was taken from the Hawthorne tree located in the front of the building that was chopped down in 1940 when the Berlin Turnpike was widened to a four lane highway. In 1945, John and Adele Grelak, the present owners' parents, purchased the Inn, and it has been in continuous operation for the past 60 years.
