ASG Tech Tip: Does My Antivirus Software Prevent All Viruses?

July 28, 2014

Does My Antivirus Software Prevent All Viruses? In simplicity, no it does not. New viruses and malware are always being released every day so the anti-virus software companies need to figure out how to detect it, deploy the "fix", and rid of it. Although it is extremely important to keep your anti-virus software up-to-date, it does mean it will catch eery virus out there. Anti-virus software is a "reactive approach".

Here are some things you can do to help protect yourself!

- Install top-of-the-line antivirus software, and keep it up to date! - Keep Java, Adobe Flash, and Acrobat Reader updated at all times, or uninstall them if you do not use them. - Be cautious with the programs you install or run on your computer! - Always keep your Windows operating system up-to-date with the latest updates and patches! - Never open email attachments, unless you are expecting them. - Use a pop-up blocker with your browser! - Surf the Internet and download more safely (download programs only from websites that you trust). Be careful where you surf! - Never click "Agree" or "OK" to get rid of a pop-up window. Instead click the red "X" in the upper right hand corner of the window. - Be wary of free music programs and free gaming programs such as Pogo

If your computer has symptoms such as: - Running much slower than it used to - Receiving pop-up messages - Strange messages indicating that you cannot access certain drives - Applications won't run or files will not open

You may have a virus and the main thing is to remember to take action quickly. The longer you run your computer with virus, the more harm the virus can do and the longer it may take to rid your computer with a virus
