It's The Year of Social Media at Westbrook Lobster

January 4, 2011

We are going to make 2011 the year of SOCIAL MEDIA! If you haven't heard about Twitter, Foursquare, and Facebook then you may have been living under the ocean for the past couple of years (and if you have, please tell us all about it!). Westbrook Lobster is getting connected to you in new and exciting ways by jumping on the Twitter, Foursquare, and Facebook bandwagon...or boat, if you will.

If you don't know how or what these applications are, here's a little introduction about them:

Twitter is a micro-blogging platform. By this, I mean Twitter is a smaller scale place to share your thoughts, ideas, and insights as compared to a full-on blog, article, newsletter, magazine, TV/radio show or commercial. Twitter is a place to share and find anything. You can share photos, graphics, videos, thoughts, ideas, people, and links - whatever you want people to find. In essence, it's an extension of our service. We can speak to you just as we would if you were here with us. Just download the Twitter app on your mobile phone and tell all your friends to join you!

To understand Foursquare, you need to understand the new wave of mobile phones. Blackberries, iPhones, Androids, and other tech-savvy phones are getting used, increasingly, as a way for people to connect with the Internet. Usually, they're connecting with two things: their e-mail, and social networks. Many of these phones are equipped with a GPS device which is the force behind Foursquare. It uses the GPS in your smart phone to figure out where you are, and then allows you to check-in to a place or establishment (restaurant, bar, coffee shop, etc...). Your friends can find you or you can see where your friends are at. Every time you check in to Foursquare, you gather points and earn badges. You also earn free food, drinks, and other prizes just by checking in! If you have checked in the most, you become "the mayor" and get special privileges (like free drinks!). To get Foursquare, just dowload the app on your moblile phone, create an account, and tell all your friends...it's that easy!

So there you have it...in a lobster shell. Both platforms are great new ways that we can interact with our guests. We (Mike & Matt) are very excited to talk and interact with you via Twitter "tweets" and to see who has been "checking-in" to Foursquare.
