Unemployment Update from 6/8/2020

Connecticut's Unemployment Update Below are a few slides from economist Don Klepper-Smith that summarize CT's March and April job losses. The numbers are staggering in that April's job loss alone is more than twice the number of all jobs created in the last 10 years. To date, 582,000 individuals have now filed for unemployment compensation in the state. The total number of CT's unemployed would fill Yale Bowl to capacity nearly 10 times. Sectors hit the hardest in terms of the percentage of the CT workers unemployed are: � Hospitality and food services workers � 44% � Arts, entertainment and recreation � 43% � Self-employed � 40% � Other services � 34% � Retail trade � 27% Included below is also a slide on the jobs lost in the U.S. for March & April. Recalling Workforce Developments from earlier this year, today's news is a sharp contrast to the under 4% unemployment rate for all of 2019 and the first 3 months of 2020.
