Workforce Alliance to Honor Dr. Dorsey L. Kendrick at 35th Annual Meeting, March 16 - Event & New Annual Report Celebrates Partnerships & Job Placements!

etiring Gateway Community College President Dr. Dorsey L. Kendrick, Ph.D. will be honored on March 16 as 2017's Workforce Champion for her commitment to quality education and skills training during Workforce Alliance's 35th Annual Meeting.

Labor policy and trend expert Paul Harrington will be the keynote speaker. The Annual Meeting and luncheon will take place at the Hilton Garden Inn, 1181 Barnes Road, Wallingford. Last year, close to 200 business, education, municipal and community leaders attended.

"We collaborate with a number of partners to implement employment and training services in South Central CT, but under Dr. Kendrick, the community college has become our strongest and most reliable partner," said Workforce Alliance President & CEO William Villano.

Dr. Kendrick announced her retirement in January after serving as president of Gateway Community College in New Haven for 18 years. She will step down as of June 1. During President Kendrick's tenure, she grew enrollment, established new credit and non-credit programs, and oversaw the completion of Gateway's downtown New Haven campus which opened in 2012.

"Education and training are the key ingredients to job placement and sustainable futures. Access to employment is the hallmark that supports quality of life for individuals and families. The relationship that exists between Gateway and Workforce Alliance is imperative to ensuring that our citizens in this region acquire, achieve and succeed with employment. We both share this common bond," said Dr. Kendrick.

An example of Workforce Alliance and Gateway's collaboration is the Health Careers Advancement Project, which currently sends trainees to Gateway and Middlesex Community College to earn or build upon entry-level health career certifications. Those who participate can also return for more training for up to 5 years in order to advance professionally, and do paid internships and on-the-job training.

Keynote speaker Paul Harrington directs the Center for Labor Markets and Policy at Drexel University. He is a sought-after expert on youth and young adults in the labor force, and has a knack for delivering data in a concise and humorous way.

Workforce Alliance will also share copies of its recently released 2015-2016 Annual Report. Highlights include serving more than 15,000 individuals throughout all American Job Centers and Workforce Alliance programs in South Central CT, partnerships with the community colleges and other training entities, and job placements throughout the state.

The report includes details on adults and youth served, plus testimonials from employers including Argo Transdata in Clinton, Aperture Optical Sciences in Meriden, and NerdsToGo in Guilford, which hired or trained staff with the help of Business Services initiatives. Summer Youth Employment Program participants are featured on the job. The opening of new American Job Centers in Meriden and within the New Haven Correctional Center marked high-points of the year, including a visit from former U.S. Labor Secretary Thomas Perez. Perez was recently named the new Democratic National Committee Chair.
