Obama Administration announces winners of $150 million in TechHire Partnership grants for at-risk and disadvantaged young Americans

June 27, 2016

From William Villano, Executive Director of the Workforce Alliance:

I am pleased to announce that Workforce Alliance, in partnership with the Northwest Workforce Board, has been awarded a $4 million TechHire Partnership Grant. The project will train 400 unemployed young adults and upgrade skills of current workers for jobs in the IT Industry; including software development, information system management, and computer programming. The program will include a variety of training models including classroom training, on-the-job training, on-line training, apprenticeships and incumbent worker training.

Over 50 employers, from large employers like IBM and Cigna, to small, independent companies, signed on to help guide the project. The state college and university system, UCONN and the Connecticut Technology Council and our regional chambers are also partners in the project. A special thanks to Workforce Alliance Board member Eileen Hasson of the Computer Company, who provided guidance and support in the development of the grant application.

This is the third successful H1-B grant award that Workforce Alliance has won in collaboration with other workforce boards in the state. Workforce Alliance, in partnership with the Eastern Workforce Board, has won two H1-B funded grants totaling $11 million designed to place long term unemployed in advanced manufacturing, Engineering and IT jobs. Additionally, in October, Workforce Alliance and the Eastern Workforce Board won a $5 million renewable Department of Health and Human Services grant to train low income individuals for careers in health care.
