DPT Provides Info on Rotator Cuff Injury and Treatment

July 2, 2012

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and their tendons that act to stabilize the shoulder. The rotator cuff muscles connect the upper arm (humerus) to the shoulder blade (scapula), allowing the shoulder to rotate. The four muscles of the rotator cuff include teres minor, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, and subscapularis. The combination of these muscles, bones, and ligaments results in the greatest range of motion of any joint in the body.

Because we use our shoulders for so many tasks like combing hair, brushing teeth, reaching overhead, swinging a golf club or baseball bat, etc. (the list is endless!), rotator cuff injuries are very common. A rotator cuff injury includes any type of irritation or damage to the rotator cuff muscles or tendons. Causes of these injuries may include falling, lifting, or repetitive arm activitiesespecially those done overhead such as throwing a baseball or placing items on an overhead shelf.

Signs and symptoms of a rotator cuff injury may include pain and tenderness in your shoulder (particularly when reaching overhead or behind your back, lifting, pulling, or sleeping on the affected side), shoulder weakness, loss of shoulder range of motion, and tendency toward keeping the shoulder still. If you have a severe injury, such as a large tendon tear, pain at rest may also be an issue. Common rotator cuff injuries include tendonitis, tendon strain or tears. Tendons in your rotator cuff can become inflamed due to overuse or overload, resulting in tendonitis. If tendonitis is left untreated, chronic tendon degeneration can eventually cause a tear or a tear may be the result of direct trauma.

If you are experiencing symptoms that limit you in your day to day activities, you should seek the advice of a medical professional. Once you have seen a clinician to determine a diagnosis, schedule an appointment to begin physical therapy to regain shoulder ROM and strength and also improve posture and body mechanics to prevent recurrence of the injury. Physical therapy is typically the first line of defense in treating these injuries and is also a very successful conservative approach that helps to offer a permanent solution.

Physical therapists at Diversified Physical Therapy are well trained in the development of comprehensive rotator cuff injury rehabilitation programs. Our therapists will perform a thorough evaluation then can design an appropriate treatment program for you. Our goal is to help you return to your activities without pain.
