December 8, 2003

Dorothy Powers, an employee of Hospice and Palliative Care of Connecticut VNA, was recently awarded a grant from the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts. Established in 1991, the Manhattan-based organization supports visual and performing artists and annually awards grants based on merit and commitment to the arts. Powers was chosen from a field of over 1000 international artists.

Powers, a Branford resident and artist for more than 25 years, is well known in Connecticut's art community as well as the healthcare field. Her watercolors, done expressly for exhibit in various healthcare facilities, have been exhibited at the Yale School of Nursing and Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford. They will be soon on exhibit at the Wallingford office of the Connecticut VNA.

Powers was the first artist hired to participate and assist in the development of the Expressive Arts program offered by Hospice & Palliative Care of Connecticut VNA. The program, designed to skillfully evaluate a patients' past, current or unfulfilled interests, uses various art forms to help them find fulfillment, enjoyment and enhance the quality of their lives. Expressive art activities can range from music appreciation, painting or photography to gardening or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. The activities are often done together with the patient's family.

Timothy Boon, Hospice Administrator, said, "We believe the success of our hospice program is due in large part to people like Dorothy, who use their unique talents and creative abilities to connect with hospice patients on a deeply personal level. We truly appreciate the contribution she has made to our Hospice program and are pleased that she was recognized by such a prestigious organization."

Hospice and Palliative Care of Connecticut VNA is an affiliate of Wallingford-based Masonicare, the state's largest not-for-profit provider of senior-focused healthcare services and retirement living communities.
