The October 27, 2005 issue of the Chronicle of Philanthropy features its annual focus on the Chronicle 400 a listing of the nation's biggest charities. For the first time, United Way is ranked #1 in the nation. The nation's 1,350 United Ways raised $3.9-billion, an increase of 0.4 percent from 2003.

However, for United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, 2005 will prove to be both a challenging and unique year with growing competition as more and more agencies mount ambitious fund-raising campaigns, particularly as governments cut back financing for charities, and a wide range of groups seek to help hurricane survivors.

Founded upon a unique heritage of voluntarism and community building, United Way has served generations of Americans from all walks of life, providing both fund-raising and organizational resources to local charitable agencies.

Today, United Way is the nation's leading community impact organization, investing in and activating the resources that make the greatest possible impact while serving communities with integrity.

"The 2005 Community Campaign is under way and so far the results have been encouraging despite difficult times," said Campaign Chairman, Bernie McLoughlin, Realtor with Levey Miller Maretz Commercial Realtors. Currently, the campaign is at about 36% or $377,404 of the $1.05 million goal. "The campaign cabinet members and other volunteers have been working hard to get the message out to donors," said Joe Baker Executive Director of United Way of Meriden and Wallingford.

Some great results have been reported so far from key companies in the community. These companies ran campaigns and conducted a variety of events, including: auctions, raffles, dress down days, cutest pets, bike a thons, and many other contests! Many thanks go to our supporters: 3M / CUNO Incorporated raised over $93.133; Ulbrich Stainless Steels raised over $26,850; Liberty Mutual raised over $4,592; First Coast raised over $8,500. And in the nonprofit division, Kuhn Employment Opportunities raised over $4,300.

United Way has encouraged a number of local employers to run United Way campaigns at their companies for the first time this year. New supporters include, Scales Air Compressor, N.V. Perricone, Morganite Crucible, OVERNITE, Transportation, Winchester Electronics, Community Health Network, Integris Metals Roman Oil, Sprint, Securitas and Z-Medica.

"It is great to help people all around the country", said McLoughlin, "but people have to remember we need help in our own community and the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford is one of the best ways to help them." The United Way of Meriden and Wallingford strengthens and enhances community and family life by providing funds for over 40 programs in 23 local health and human service agencies.

United Way is dedicated to what matters in our community: Strengthening Families, Nurturing Children and Meeting Critical Needs. For more information, please visit www.unitedwaymw.org.
