Two staff members from the Masonic Healthcare Center in Wallingford were presenters at the 56th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Gerontological Society of America, held in San Diego, California from November 21-25, 2003.The topic "Assessing and Applying Family Ethics" was presented to members of the Society by Jack Paul Gesino, DSW, Associate Professor of Social Work at Southern Connecticut State University and Director of Late-Life Families at Masonicare's Trilogy Psychiatric Services, and Marjorie Haas, LCSW, social worker with the Geriatric Assessment Program at Masonic Healthcare Center.
Gesino and Haas presented the results of a survey they had conducted of 275 family caregivers. The survey explored the extent to which the decisions caregivers made for impaired elder family members were guided by family ethics learned from early development and childhood. Their presentation explored how caregivers often question their own ability when making important decisions for family members and how they use philosophical reflection about their responsibilities to maximize care and reduce the sense of "not being good enough" in providing care. Healthcare professionals were given techniques to use to assist family members in making important decisions and ways to incorporate such principles into their own care plans.
