Ion Bank Foundation Awards Grant to American Red Cross Program

May 26, 2015

The Ion Bank Foundation has awarded a $3,000 grant to the American Red Cross Connecticut Chapter to create three scholarships for students who enroll in the chapter's Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) training program. The scholarships will be awarded to three students from Naugatuck, Waterbury or Meriden.

The Ion Bank Foundation, which awarded a total of $475,834 in grants during 2014, has conferred more than $5 million in awards since it was established in 1998.

Launched in 1996, the Red Cross CNA training program has provided aspiring nurse assistants with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide quality health care to patients in hospitals, residents in nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, and clients in their homes. Approved by both the State Department of Higher Education and the State Department of Public Health, the 100-hour program also helps CNA students prepare for the state certification exam.

The program graduates an average of 700 CNA students each year from training sites in Bethel, Bridgeport, East Hartford, New Haven and Waterbury.

The Waterbury training site, located at 228 Meadow Street, enrolled 68 students in 2014, including 34 students who received scholarships, said Patricia M. Scharr, senior director in charge of resource development for the Red Cross. Of the 68 students, 67 passed the course and 66 went on to pass the state certification exam.

"We believe there is a great need for scholarships in the Waterbury area," Scharr said, citing data that indicated more students would register for the program if they had access to financial assistance.
