Meriden Family Zone Updates

July 15, 2012

Helping Families Help Themselves: So far this year, families in the Zone have taken advantage of several programs geared to help them advocate for and support their children. Here are some highlights:

PLTI Graduates 15th Class: In June, 14 people graduated from the Parent Leadership Training Institute, a 20-week course designed to help parents become advocates for their children. The course teaches participants about everything from self and family to politics, policy and how to use the media.

CFAL Offers Free Computers and Training: Thanks to the New Haven-based nonprofit Concepts for Adaptive Learning (CFAL), 49 families who live in the Zone have received free refurbished computers, free computer training (offered in English and Spanish), and discounted internet service. Another computer training class will be offered in the fall, according to CfAL Executive Director Curtis Hill.

Visit this site for photos, video and stories about the latest Zone news, including the recent visit by Connecticut Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor.

And, for more information about the Promise Neighborhood Implementation Grant and the multitude of other city improvement efforts connected to the Meriden Family Zone, please see the Fact Sheet posted on the MFZ website. Have a safe and happy summer! Sincerely, David Radcliffe, Meriden Children First
