Kinson Perry, Director, and member of the Chamber's Government & Business Development Committee, has written a timely and informative article for the Record-Journal. He states that Connecticut must keep pace with the fast movement into the next century. SNET and its parent company, SBC Communications, are investing almost $ 1 billion in Connecticut's telecommunications network. They consider it part of their commitment to bring their customers high-quality, dependable voice service, as well as the latest broadband technologies. This two-year investment represents the largest network capital program in the company's history. It will make more room for high-speed data transmission and make the network more reliable. This will enable SNET to provide their customers with a broad new spectrum of advanced products and services via a state-of-the-art infrastructure- so that their customers can remain in the forefront of the digital economy, while ensuring the continuity of voice service on which they depend. Among other improvements, the investment extends Connecticut's fiber-optic cables by 168,000 miles, a 54% increase for a total of 481,000 miles of fiber statewide. It launches Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service - high-speed, always-on Internet access - making it available in more than one million homes and businesses in 84 Connecticut towns and cities by spring. It also strengthens network reliability through fully redundant network and metro rings, which re-route traffic so that when a line goes down, network service isn't hampered. SNET believes these investments are essential not only for attracting high-tech companies to Connecticut, but also for meeting the growing needs of their existing customers. SNET is committed to leading Connecticut at the head of the race into the 21st century.
