July 10, 2024
Dear BBB Accredited Business, We hope this message finds you well. We are writing to inform you of a recent business email compromise/phishing scam that is currently circulating and targeting companies, including BBB Accredited Businesses. This scam appears to originate from a BBB Serving CT employee, Grace Adams, using the email address gadams@ct.bbb.org. However, they are not in fact from BBB.Please be advised that these emails are fraudulent and part of a phishing scam. We urge you not to click on any links or take any action prompted by these emails. We are aware of the situation and are taking appropriate measures to address it.
How to Spot a Scam Email To help protect your business, here are some red flags to look out for:
Unfamiliar Senders: Be cautious of emails from unknown senders, even if they appear to be from a reputable organization like the BBB. Suspicious Links: Hover over links to see the actual URL before clicking. Scammers often use URLs that mimic legitimate sites. Urgent Requests: Be wary of emails that create a sense of urgency or pressure you to take immediate action. Grammatical Errors: Many phishing emails contain spelling mistakes or awkward phrasing. What to Do If You Receive a Phishing Email
If you receive a suspicious email, follow these steps: 1. Do Not Click Links: Avoid clicking on any links or downloading attachments. 2. Verify the Sender: Contact the organization directly using a verified phone number or email address. 3. Report the Email: Report the email to BBB Scam Tracker. 4. Delete the Email: Once reported, delete the email from your inbox. If You Have Clicked on a Phishing Link If you accidentally clicked on a phishing link or provided personal information, take the following actions immediately: 1. Change Passwords: Update passwords for any accounts that might have been compromised. 2. Monitor Accounts: Keep an eye on your financial and other sensitive accounts for any unusual activity. 3. Run Security Software: Use updated antivirus software to scan your computer for malware. 4. Notify Affected Parties: Inform any business contacts that might be impacted by the breach. 5. Work with IT. Work directly with your IT partners to run any scans or ensure you are secure after clicking links within a potential scam email.
