Meriden Mayor Mark Benigni hosted the 1st Annual Scrabble Challenge Tournament on Wednesday, January 23 at The Village at Kensington Place. The event, a fund-raiser for Literacy Volunteers, was well attended by members of the Meriden community. Groups represented included the Meriden Rotary Club, Friends of the Meriden Library, students from the Key Club at Maloney H.S., teachers from Washington M.S., Meriden Business & Learning Center, Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce, Meriden Kiwanis Club, Meriden Health Department, People's Bank and the New Haven Public Library. Scrabble was played as a team of four and the goal was to create the board with the most points in 30 minutes. The winning team, Julie Ball, Valerie Levesque, Leslie Corriveau and Joanne Simmonds had more than 800 points and they'll defend their title at the New Haven Literacy Volunteers Scrabble Tournament in May. Proceeds form the event went to support the good work that Literacy Volunteers do in the Meriden and Wallingford area. Plan on attending next year!
