9th Annual Scrabble Challenge Results - Stats

April 8, 2012

250 friends of literacy joined together to play competitive Scrabble at the 9th annual Scrabble Challenge on March 27. The event, a fundraiser to support the work of literacy tutors in the Meriden and Wallingford communities, was sponsored by the Record-Journal, Fosdick Corporation, the Four Points by Sheraton, Accel International, AT&T, Midstate Medical Center, Milone & MacBroom and Seasons Federal Credit Union.

Sean Moore and Jim Ieronimo, along with Mayors Bill Dickinson and Mike Rohde helped raise $12,000 for Literacy Volunteers. The Community Book Bank was also a winner - more than 500 gently used children's books were donated by the Scrabble players to be given to the children of Meriden and Wallingford.

First place honors in the Friends and Family category went to the team from Milone & MacBroom, followed by a team of Literacy Volunteer tutors and the team from the Record-Journal. The Student category was won by Platt High School and the winner in the City/Town category was Meriden.

The five highest scoring teams from Meriden were led by 1) Kevin Scarpati, 2) Brian Daniels, 3) Joy Dutra (Gus Robotics), 4) Roger Sherman School and 5) the Meriden Public Library. The five highest scoring teams from Wallingford were 1) Pat Johnson and the Wallingford Library, 2) Pat DeCerbo and the Town of Wallingford, 3) the Wallingford Senior Center, 4) Jean Kobrin and the Wallingford Library and 5) E.C. Stevens School.

The Literacy Volunteers, Meriden office who run the Community Book Bank are seeking companies that would like to hold internal book drives to assist them in restocking their book supply. The Community Book Bank uses donated space and volunteers to collect, sort and supply books to agencies, schools and organizations that serve families with children to ensure that all local children have access to quality educational reading material.

A typical book drive would last around two weeks and collects gently used pre-k to teen books. Any size book drive, whether it collects 10 books or 200 books would be tremendous help! The Community Book Bank would appreciate delivery, but are more than willing to pick up if necessary. Call (203) 235-1714 for more information or to set up a drive at your organization!
