Literacy Volunteers - Free Children's Books

January 19, 2011

Literacy Volunteers, with support from the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, is proud to announce the opening of Meriden's Community Book Bank. Agencies, schools and other organizations in Meriden and Wallingford that serve families with children of all ages are encouraged to contact us at BookBank@lvagnh.org to place an order for free books!

The Community Book Bank was launched in November, 2010 with the help of our generous community partners. Border's Books started it out by asking their customers to donate brand new books. They brought in 500 new books. Holy Angels Parish followed up by collecting more than 400 gently used books. Pyramid Technologies came through in November, with the assistance of Girl Scout Troop # 64106 from Prospect, gathering about 2,600 used books. Currently Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is active in their drive. Upcoming partners include Wilcox Regional Technical High School's Interact Club. If your company is willing to help, send a note to BookBank@lvagnh.org.

The effort is coordinated by volunteer Nancy Milano, who sorts the books and organizes them for re-distribution. The Meriden Department of Health and Human Services, under the direction of Beth Vumbaco, has been kind enough to donate space in the Stoddard building for this purpose.

Recipients of the free books include Meriden Adult Education, the Boys and Girls Club, Casimir Pulaski School, Catholic Charities, the Child Guidance Clinic, CHC Nurturing Families, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Youth Services, Wallingford's Early Childhood Alliance, Meriden's Family Zone, the Franciscan Life Center, Hanover School, Head Start, Hispanic Unidos, the Meriden Housing Authority, Israel Putnam School, John Barry School, Lincoln Middle School, Middlesex Community College, My Little World Daycare, New Opportunities of Greater Meriden, Roger Sherman School, Shelter NOW, the Spanish Community of Wallingford, Thomas Edison Middle School, WIC and the Young Mothers Program. There's room for more!!

Pass this information on - let your community partners know about us! We're Banking on our Children's Future!
