West Nile Virus and Retention Ponds: The City of ...

May 24, 2001

West Nile Virus and Retention Ponds: The City of Meriden, Department of Health, would like to remind all businesses of the need to clean and maintain all retention ponds or draining ditches on the business property. It is the property owner's responsibility to ensure that all stagnant water is treated with a larvicide product to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes and the potential spread of West Nile Virus. The Health Department will respond to all calls concerning stagnant water and mosquito breeding sites . If stagnant water is observed, a legal order may be issued to the property owner mandating the treatment and/or elimination of the breeding conditions. Therefore, we are asking for your advanced cooperation to ensure that all retention/holding ponds are properly treated to prevent a mosquito-breeding habitat. If you have any questions, please contact the City of Meriden, Department of Health, Environmental Health Section, at 203-630-4226.
