Signs of Frostbite Provided by Meriden Health Dept.

December 7, 2011

The Meriden Health Dept. is committed to keeping you healthy in December! Know thes signs of frostbite:

White, grayish-yellow, or blue skin area; Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy; Numbness (loss of feeling), tingling, stinging feeling.

If you think you or someone you know has frostbite, seek medical care. While waiting, or if no medical care is available, do the following: Get into a warm room and dry clothes as soon as possible; Try not to walk on frostbitten feet or toes - this can make the condition worse; Warm the affected body part slowly. Immerse the affected body part in warm - not hot - water. Do not apply direct heat such as a heating pad, heat lamp, and do not use the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming. If the face is affected, use a blanket or towel to warm the face. Do not rub or massage the frostbitten area - this can cause more damage to the tissues.
