March 14, 2000

For about a dozen participants in the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce's Meriden Leadership Challenge, it was like going back to the classroom. For this day-long session, the group gathered at City Hall. A series of speakers lectured on topics ranging from the functions of local government to economic development. Sessions included a presentation by Stephen Zerio, chairman of the City Council's Economic Development, Housing and Zoning committee. He stressed that the city is rebounding including the telecommunications industry that have located in the city. In addition to Mr. Zerio, participants also got an overview of city government and its budget from Roger Kemp. Other speakers included Ken Cowing from the Meriden Historical Society and Randall Kamerbeek, the city's economic director, who stressed the need for individuals to make a commitment to their community. Chamber President Sean W. Moore also emphasized that many of participants in the Leadership Challenge now hold strong positions in the community and the program gives them the opportunity to become leaders of the Meriden community. Many participants planned to employ their knowledge in their new positions or pass it on to their students and colleagues.
