WFC's S.T.A.R. Program Update

November 29, 2011

WFC's S.T.A.R. Program is gearing up for another exciting year of engaging, hands-on learning! Thanks to a generous After-School Grant from the CT State Dept. of Education, WFC's after-school sites will work in partnership with the Meriden Board of Education to expand children's learning and enrichment opportunities in Literacy, Math & Science and Health & Wellness.

Children in grades 1-5 will have an opportunity to write, illustrate and publish their own original books through creative bookmaking workshops, and participate in several science units focused on topics such as Light & Sound, Electricity and Force & Motion. A number of wellness activities will be offered focusing on nutrition and physical well-being. In addition, the children will be able to participate in several exciting field trips and interactive presentations from the Children's Science Museum.

WFC is excited to welcome Annie Kelleher to the S.T.A.R.program. As our "author in residence", Annie will work with the teachers and children offering her expertise to the book writing project.

Annie Kelleher is the author of 12 novels published internationally and translated into five languages. Her most recent novel, How David Met Sarah, has been endorsed by the National Down Syndrome Society for its insight into the world of developmentally disabled adults. The mother of four and grandmother of two, Annie resides in Canton, CT where she enjoys nurturing others' creativity.
