December 26, 2001

The hospital has announced a plan to expand with a 40,000 square-foot, two-story pavilion costing $ 18.7 million. 28 beds will be added with a license for 36. The emergency department will also be increased. Lucille Janatka, president and chief executive officer, believes the expansion will serve the community's needs even into the future. There has been a steady increase in emergency room visits and inpatient admissions. A year and a half ago, a prefabricated extension was added to hold engineering and other support departments which moved to accommodate expanding emergency room demands. The medical/surgical department has been operating at more than 100 per cent capacity, which forces moving patients into other areas. During the last fiscal year, 85 patients had to be diverted from the hospital. Eric Wexler, vice president and chief operating officer, maintains that efficient hospitals should operate at 75 per cent Mrs. Janatka assures that MediQuick on the East Campus will be maintained. The expansion would add 100 new positions, 60 to 80 of which would be full-time. The new addition will be designed to accommodate further expansion if necessary in the future. Hospital officials hope the addition will be completed by the end of next year.
