MidState Medical Center is taking the lead locally in a national alliance of 2,200 health care organizations and their physicians to fight heart disease in women. The collaboration is called Women's HeartAdvantage� and is available for women throughout our region. Heart Disease is the number one killer of American women each year, claiming more than 500,000 lives.The following is a list of cardiac risk factors: Smoking/tobacco use, High blood pressure (>140/90mm Hg), High cholesterol (total >200 mg/dL), Low HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dL), High triglycerides (>150 mg/dL), Diabetes (fasting glucose >126 mg/dL), Overweight, Lack of regular exercise, Excessive demand, strain, stress: type A behavior or Depression.
Risk factors that cannot be changed are Age (male > 45 years, female > 55 years) and Family history of heart disease (male relative heart attack <55 years, female relative heart attack < 65 years).
