MidState Medical Center has reached an agreement that will integrate its outpatient mental health and substance abuse services, MidState Behavioral Health System (MBHS), into Rushford Center Inc., effective July 1, 2003. The MBHS name will continue to be used and the current programs will continue to operate at the existing Meriden locations at 883 Paddock Avenue and 384 Pratt Street. The combined organization will be positioned more effectively to ensure the continuation of direct care services in a statewide environment of decreasing resources.

"The reorganization will allow MBHS to continue to offer the high quality behavioral health services that our community has come to expect," said Lucille A. Janatka, President and CEO of MidState Medical Center. "Rushford's excellent reputation and successful leadership will increase the ability to provide a continuum of prevention and behavioral health care services."

Rushford and MBHS will consolidate operations as part of a larger plan to develop a high quality, integrated behavioral health network within Hartford Healthcare Corporation, the parent company of MidState Medical Center and Rushford Center. The network also includes the Hartford Hospital's Institute of Living and Natchaug Hospital in Mansfield Center. Inpatient psychiatric services will continue to be offered by MidState Medical Center at its main campus on Lewis Avenue in Meriden.

Rushford's executive team, led by President and CEO, Jeffrey Walter, has managed the day to day operation of MBHS since October 2001, under an agreement with MidState Medical Center's Board of Directors. "Our continued emphasis will be to provide high quality, accessible care," said Walter.

MidState Behavioral Health System is committed to improving the quality of life for individuals who suffer from behavioral health disorders or disabilities including severe and prolonged mental illness. MBHS provides outpatient mental health and substance abuse treatment services, and a respite program, at the East Campus on Paddock Avenue. Community Support Programs, including supportive housing, case management, and social and vocational rehabilitation services are provided from the MBHS facility on Pratt Street.

Rushford Center is dedicated to meeting the substance abuse and mental health needs of children, adults and families. Rushford provides a continuum of progressive, outpatient and inpatient treatment programs for adult men and women as well as outpatient treatment programming for adolescents. A wide range of broad-based, community prevention services focus on student assistance programs, after-school and summer prevention activities, juvenile justice programs and a variety of other community-oriented education and awareness activities. Rushford has residential programs in Meriden that serve at-risk and abused children who are in the custody of the State Department of Children and Families.
