On Thursday, September 8th, about 100 people gathered at the YMCA Mountain Mist Outdoor Center to kick off the United Way of Meriden and Wallingford 2005 Community Campaign at the Business After Hours event with the Greater Meriden Chamber of Commerce. United Way held a pre-press conference prior to the event announcing the Campaign Goal of $1,050,000.

Bernie McLoughlin, United Way Campaign Chair, and real estate agent at Levey Miller Maretz Commercial Realtors, explained: "United Way is one of the best and most effective ways to make a difference for people in our community. That is because United Way volunteers raise money for for programs that are local, right here in the community of Meriden and Wallingford. United Way volunteers also evaluate and support the programs that are making a lasting difference for people in our community."

Board President Frank W. Ridley announced a $5,000 contribution that will be made by United Way of Meriden and Wallingford to the Hurricane Katrina Response Fund from the agency's reserve fund. Joe Baker, Executive Director of United Way of Meriden and Wallingford, said, "It is because United Ways have created and supported networks of services throughout the country that we are able to respond during times of crisis." "Continued support of local programs through this year's United Way campaign is critical to our ability to support local residents and new families from the Gulf states who need our assistance."

Each year, United Way programs help about 30,000 of our coworkers, customers and neighbors, through crisis and information services, early childhood and youth programs, counseling, and other programs that support families, adults and the elderly.
